Tipping Is Optional But Necessary
While tipping is a cultural norm in the US, it's not required by law. People are free to tip as much or as little as they please, regardless of what the bill says. When it comes to proper etiquette at sit-down restaurants, it's generally good practice to leave between 15%-20% of the total amount. Studies have shown that income is often directly correlated to tipping percentage, with lower-income diners leaving smaller tips or none at all and higher-income diners being more generous with the gratuity. Depending on your means and the quality of service you receive, you should always try to leave at least 15% where possible. If you want to leave more, no server will ever be ungrateful for your generosity.
