Servers Are There To Serve You, But They're Still People, Too
Servers should be trained to provide you with the best customer service possible, but you also need to treat them kindly in return. When they come to greet your table, don't ignore them by continuing your conversation with your dining companions. Give them your full attention so they can introduce themselves, distribute the menus and present any daily specials. This prevents them from having to stand there awkwardly, waiting for your attention. It sounds pretty standard to acknowledge your server's presence, but you'd be surprised how rude people can be in practice.
