Although Greece has been through a devastating financial crisis and will struggle to rebuild itself for a long time, the native people of Ikaria remain some of the healthiest, longest-living individuals in the world. One-third of the population lives to 90 or older, and according to bluezones.com, its residents "are almost entirely free of dementia and some of the chronic diseases that plague Americans." So what are they doing right? Enjoying life, staying active and eating well, it would seem:
Rule number one: Don't stress. Time exists in Ikaria but doesn't govern people's lives. They live at their own pace (aka not in a rush) and take naps everyday. But they also remain active by walking, fishing and farming.
They thrive on a Mediterranean diet, heavy on seasonal fruits and veggies, complex carbs and olive oil. Again, meat and fish account for a small percentage of what they eat.
Ikarians, like the Okinawans and Sardinians, embrace social connection and are dedicated to their community.
They also seem to be a relatively easygoing people, which helps them avoid unnecessary stress and tense relations.
