How America's Favorite Halloween Candies Came to Be

Swedish Fish

Swedish candy producer Malaco is behind the creation of its aptly named Swedish Fish, which come in the shape of chewy, red, fish-shaped gummies. It was developed in the 1950's for the US market as a nod to Sweden's huge fish culture and became especially popular in candy stores where you can buy items by weight. While Swedish fish are known for their signature red color, they are now available in more colors and flavors, including lemon-lime and orange. Today, the candy is produced for US consumers in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Turkey by Mondelez International. Somewhat ironically, it's marketed as a "fat-free food."

This French tarte tatin is golden, caramelized apple perfection!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 puff pastry
  • 6 apples, sliced
  • 3 oz.  chilled butter, chopped into chunks
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

 

METHOD

  1. Roll out a puff pastry.
  2. Lay out the apple slices in a pan.
  3. Add chunks of butter on top of the apples.
  4. Sprinkle the brown sugar on top.
  5. Cook for 20 minutes in oven at 350°F, to caramelize the apples.
  6. Place puff pastry on top of the caramelized apples.
  7. Cook for 15 minutes at 350°F.
  8. Enjoy!
