Tootsie Roll

The Tootsie Roll is one of the older American candies, having been invented in 1896 by Leo Hirschfield, an Austrian Jewish immigrant who patented the technique that gives tootsie rolls their hard-to-soft, chewy texture. Hirschfield named the candy for his daughter, Clara, who he affectionately called "Tootsie." The candy was hand-rolled and originally sold for just one cent. Originally marketed and produced under the name Sweets Company of America, the name was changed to Tootsie Roll Industries in 1966. Today, you can find Tootsie Rolls in different sizes and also at the center of Tootsie Pops.
