How America's Favorite Halloween Candies Came to Be

Snickers

Snickers came about in 1930, created by Mars, Incorporated and named after the the Mars family's favorite horse. Its combination of nougat, peanuts, caramel and chocolate milk coating won over Americans and UK and Irish residents, where it was known as "Marathon" up until 1990. While the candy bar was previously sold in "King Size" format, the company received criticism for its lack of health consciousness, so it introduced the "Duo" to replace it. This two-bar package was marketed to encourage sharing, though the overall weight of the product hadn't changed, nor did the price. Today, Snickers reigns as one of the best-selling candy bars in the States and around the world.
