Keen to convert pagans to Catholocism, the Church decreed that the holiday of Hallowmas would extend until the 31st of October, to overlap with the pagan tradition of Samhain. The Church began incorporating more and more pagan symbols and ideas into the Hallowmas tradition, which eventually evolved to become what we know as Halloween today.
