We should be carving turnips

The tradition of carving pumpkins comes from an old Celtic folk tale of a farmer called Jack who used to play tricks on the devil. To get even, the devil forced Jack to wander purgatory with only a burning lump of coal (from hell, of course). Jack carved a turnip into a lantern and put the coal inside it to light his way. So why do we carve pumpkins? Because the Irish brought over this story to America with them, and pumpkins were easier to find (and carve) than turnips!
