This Is Why You DON'T Want to Use the Last Stall in a Public Bathroom

,

You're in a restaurant, at a bar, at the movies... and you need to go to the bathroom. You go in and there's a whole row of toilet stalls, most of which (or all) are emtpy. Which one do you choose?

Although we think our decision is totally random, the truth is that most of us unconsciously settle on the same decision.

The New Yorker revealed that men typically gravitate toward the closest one to the entrance, whereas women usually go to the last one, looking for a little more privacy. The result is that, in women's bathrooms, this last stall is normally the dirtiest and the first one the cleanest, as it's the least used.

Apart from systematically avoiding to use the last stall when we go to the bathroom, other sanity measures you should always take are:

  • Clean the toilet seat. Even if you're not planning to sit down fully on the seat, wipe down the seat with toilet paper first.
  • Avoid any contact with your clothing. Try not to let your underwear, pants, or skirt touch any part of the toilet or the floor.
  • Do not put things on the floor. If you have a coat, purse, or anything else with you that you can't hold, look for a hook to hang them on or leave them with a friend.
  • Make sure everything works. Before doing anything, test that the toilet flushes and that there's toilet paper at the ready. Better safe than sorry so you know that everything works properly before it's too late.
  • Use the trash can. This is something many people don't think about when venturing into public bathrooms. These toilets get a lot more regular use than our private ones at home, so it's a lot more likely that they'll get stopped up and cause something disastrous to happen. You don't want to be the "lucky" one! When in doubt or even a bit hesitant, make use of that handy trash can next to the toilet.
