Another sauce you can buy at the store but tastes so much better homemade is Japanese teriyaki sauce. It can be whipped up in 15 min. with just 4 simple ingredients: soy sauce, mirin, sake and sugar. When cooked together into a thick glaze, it becomes the most delicious sweet and savory seasoning for all your proteins and Asian-style recipes. Teriyaki in Japanese actually refers to a cooking technique, whereby foods are broiled or grilled and slathered with teriyaki sauce to give them a nice luster and plenty of flavor.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup (125ml) soy sauce
1/2 cup (125ml) mirin
1/2 cup (125ml) sake
1/4 cup (50g) sugar
Instructions:
Add all the ingredients to a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and stir constantly until the sugar dissolves. When the mixture is boiling, turn the heat down to medium-low and simmer for about 15 min. until the sauce thickens and turns slightly glossy.
Once you stir and see small bubbles rise to the surface, it's done. Transfer to a container and let cool.
Use it to glaze, marinate and season fish, poultry or plant-based proteins.
