A study on the 5-second rule

The researchers used a naturally-occurring bacteria in the human digestive system called Enterobacter aerogenes, a cousin of Salmonella. They cultivated the bacteria and then spread it onto the different surfaces, waiting for it to dry before testing. Each surface, contact time, food and bacterial preparation was tested, yielding 128 scenarios that were replicated 20 times over. They ended up taking in a total of 2,560 measurements.
