Pierogis - Poland

Pierogi are popular all over central and eastern Europe, and although their origins are still up for debate, these filled dumplings are most commonly associated with Polish cuisine. They come in both sweet and savory versions, with various ingredients wrapped in pockets of unleavened dough that are boiled and then pan-fried. One of the most popular savory dumplings in Poland is known as pierogi ruskie, stuffed with quark cheese, potatoes and fried onions. Others fillings include ground meat, mushrooms, sauerkraut or fruits. Savory pierogi are often served with fried onions, bacon and sour cream on the side.

Where to eat: One place that sticks out for its traditional and modern options is Na Winklu in the western city of Poznan. Try their famous traditional boiled dumplings or the baked ones with original fillings like dried tomatoes and mozzarella or Mexican-style ground beef.
