Deep Dish Pizza - USA

New Yorkers might turn up their noses with disdain at this famous Chicago pizza variant, but no one can deny its mouthwatering appeal. Made with a thick, doughy, buttery crust and generous layers of cheese, sauce, and toppings, it gives real credibility to the phrase "pizza pie". Unlike its thinner counterparts, deep dish pizza is baked in a deep, circular pan, and the dough is molded to cover the sides of the pan. There's also a reversal of the cheese and sauce layers, which helps keep the pizza moist and tender during the long cooking time.

Where to eat: Giordano's and Lou Malnati's are Chicago mainstays for deep dish pizza. Both were founded in the '70s and now have more than 60 locations.
