Escargots - France

The idea of eating snails might sound repulsive to some, but don't knock it 'til you've tried it. Typically served bubbling hot in their shells and smothered with the most addictive butter, garlic and parsley sauce, they're eaten with a special type of fork and utensil to hold the shells (cue the scene of Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman). Escargots tend to have a firm, chewy texture, which is probably what triggers many naysayers. Whatever you may think of them, they're a unique and delicious dish that should be enjoyed with a crisp glass of white wine for a truly French experience.

Where to eat: L'Escargot on the famous rue Montorgueil has been a Parisian institution since 1832, known for its original Burgundy snails recipe that hasn't changed. Today, you can also try a variety of their different sauce flavors, such as truffle, foie gras, brie and hot pepper.
