Gulab jamun - India
If you're looking for a tasty Indian sweet that's somewhat similar to American donut holes, look no further than gulab jamun. This melt-in-your-mouth dessert is commonly served at weddings in India and during the Diwali festival. It's made by kneading milk solids, flour, baking soda, and ghee or butter into a dough, which is shaped into small balls and deep-fried until golden brown. To serve, the fried balls are soaked in a sugar syrup flavored with cardamom, saffron, and rose water, giving them a soft, syrupy texture and a fragrant, sweet taste.
Where to eat: Located near the Golden Temple in Punjab, you'll find the legendary sweet shop Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala, which sells some of the best jaleb and gulab jamun in town. Fans rave about the dripping hot, melt-in-your mouth gulab jamun, which also happen to be pretty cheap.
