Moules-Frites - Belgium

Moules-frites originated in Belgium but is also an extremely popular dish in France. There's no word play behind the name—it's simply French for "mussels and fries", and you can expect simple yet delicious flavors from it. The mussels can be prepared with different types of sauces, but the most classic version is moules marinière, made of steamed mussels in white wine, shallots, parsley and butter. Served with a side of crispy golden fries, the mussels are best eaten by using an empty shell like tongs to remove the flesh from the remaining mussels. Then you can place the empty shells in a separate dish.

Where to eat: A Belgian institution since 1956, Le Zinneke in Schaerbeek offers up a dizzying 70 different varieties of moules-frites, with a whole kilo (2 lbs) per person. Warning: you'll probably want to go back several times to try different options.
