Patacones - Latin America & the Dominican Republic
Patacones are a popular Latin American and Caribbean side dish, also known as tostones, platano frito, tachinos, etc. depending where you are. Made from unripe plantains, they're typically round, flat and fried twice to get a nice crispy exterior and soft interior. You can find them served in restaurants as a side dish or sold as a snack by street vendors. Savory and addictive, they can be served with various condiments or even topped with cheese, ceviche and pulled meats. Colombian patacones (pictured above) are delicious with hogao sauce made with tomatoes and onions or spicy aji salsa on the side.
Where to eat: As previously mentioned, you can find these delightfully savory fried plantains everywhere throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. You might want to try them as street food first, as they have the best flavor when served hot out of the fryer.
