Bunny Chow - South Africa

Craving fast food in South Africa? Bypass the golden arches, and head to the city of Durban, where you can order yourself a comforting meal of bunny chow. No, this Indian-inspired dish is not made with bunny meat—rather mutton, lamb, chicken or beans. The meat or beans are prepared in a spicy curry and served in a hollowed-out loaf of white bread that comes in quarter, half and full loaf sizes. A good bunny chow will have lots of gravy that really soaks into the bread walls. Most locals order a quarter loaf and eat it with their fingers, ripping off pieces of the bread as they make their way through the curry.

Where to eat: For a local, no-frills bunny chow experience, go to the family-run Gounden's Restaurant & Takeaway. Located in an industrial part of town, it has a canteen-like atmosphere, and it's known for serving generous portions of spicy mutton curry at a reasonable price.
