Wild Boar
Wild boar has been an important food source in different cultures throughout history. In ancient times, wild boar was consumed in a number of ways, and its meat was prized for its flavor and nutritional value. Here are some of the ways wild boar was eaten in ancient times:
1. Roasted. A common way of preparing wild boar was to roast it. It was usually cooked whole, especially for festivities and banquets. It was seasoned with spices, herbs, and sometimes vinegar, or broth was poured on it in order to enhance the flavor. Roasted wild boar was often served as a lavish main dish during age old dinners, and was guaranteed to impress guests.
2. Stew. Another popular way of preparing wild boar was to enjoy it in stews or casseroles. The meat was cut into chunks and simmered with broth, wine or other liquids which allowed the meat to become tender. Vegetables, herbs, and spices were often added too, as they added a punch of flavor.
3. Sausages and salted meats. Wild boar was also used to make sausages or dried and salted The meat was minced and mixed with spices, herbs, and other ingredients, and was then stuffed into natural casings, such as animal skin to make sausages. Often, the sausages were smoked, dried, or salted for preservation, and could be stored for long periods before consumation.
4. Hunting (and direct consumption!) In some cultures, wild boars were hunted and their meat was consumed directly ... perhaps one way of preparing wild boar that we'd like to opt out of!
