Lamb Meatballs
The first lamb meatball recipe ever recorded, was apparently written by Muhammad bin Hasan al-Baghdadi in the 12th century.
It's found in one of the oldest surviving recipe books, the Kitab al-Tabih, which translates to The Book of Dishes. Little is known about the author-cum-chef, but his book was found perfectly intact in a Turkish library.
According to the Kit al-Tabih, the lamb meatballs should be seasoned with cilantro, pepper, cinnamon, onion and saffron. They should be served over a bed of mint leaves, and bathed in a a sauce of meat juice and pomegranate seeds. Interesting!
