Beer
Our ancestors must've enjoyed a good time, because beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages to exist!
Just like barley, it's thought to have originated in ancient Mesopoamia, which today occupies modern day Iraq. The Sumerians, one of the first civilizations to inhabit the region around 4000 B.C., had knowledge of the fermentation process and brewed a beverage similar to beer using malted barley.
The beverage was a hit, and it spread through different cultures and regions pretty fast. The Egyptians developed the drink, and it was enjoyed by both the rich and the poor. In ancient Greece and Rome, wine was the prefered alcoholic beverage, but malted barley beer was still popular.
During the Middle Ages, monastries played an important role in the production of European beer. They improved and refined the brewing technique, and in the following centuries, beer gained global popularity. Particular styles and production methods were finessed in different countries, such as wheat beer in Germany and ale in Great Britain. Cheers to our ancestors!
