You wouldn't have guessed it, but Portugese explorers are said to have brought the dish to India in the 15th century. Back then, it was known as Carne de Vinha d'Alhos, or meat marinated in wine vinegar and garlic. As with any recipe that has roots elsewhere, the Indians made it their own ith aromatic spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom, and hot chili peppers, which really did add a whole other level of flavor!
