The Japanese Tea Garden started as part of an exhibit for the 1894 World’s Fair.  After the World Fair ended, a wealthy local Japanese-American landscaper, Makoto Haigwara, decided to make the garden permanent.

In 1909, he had the brilliant idea of delighting tea-tasters with a sweet treat that would make them smile. And so these unique crunchy cookies were born!
