Hailing from the state of Iowa, these classic Sloppy Joes are hearty, flavorful, and perfect for a quick and satisfying weeknight dinner. Served on whole wheat buns, they offer a slightly healthier twist on the traditional comfort food favorite. Feel free to add extra spice to your liking or serve these up on ciabatta or artisan bread to make it even more exciting!
Ingredients ( for 4-6 sandwiches):
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp yellow mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
4 whole wheat buns
Instructions:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks.
Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked beef. Cook for about 5 min. or until the vegetables are softened.
Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using). Mix well to combine.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 min., stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and the flavors are well combined.
Toast the whole wheat buns lightly, if desired.
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with the other halves and serve immediately. Enjoy!
