No Midwestern menu is complete without an ultra-easy casserole. This dish takes ordinary green beans and transforms them into a timeless favorite, perfect for holiday dinners or just an easy weeknight side dish. The creamy mushroom sauce, tender green beans, and crispy fried onion topping make it a comforting and delicious addition to any meal.
Ingredients (for 4-6 servings):
1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces (or 2 cans (14.5 oz each) cut green beans, drained)
1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp soy sauce
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 1/3 cups French fried onions, divided
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
If using fresh green beans, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 4-5 min. or until tender. Drain and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper. Stir in the cooked (or canned and drained) green beans and 2/3 cup of the French fried onions.
Transfer the green bean mixture to a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 min. or until the mixture is hot and bubbling.
Sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup French fried onions over the top of the casserole. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 min. or until the onions are golden brown.
Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm, and enjoy!
