As the state fish of South Dakota and Minnesota, fishing for walleye is a popular sport among midwesterners. These Beer Battered Walleye Fillets are a crispy, flavorful delight, perfect for a cozy dinner or a special treat. The light and airy beer batter complements the tender, flaky walleye, making for an irresistible fish dish!
Ingredients (for 2 fillets):
2 walleye fillets (about 6-8 oz each)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup beer (lager or pale ale works well)
Vegetable oil, for frying
Lemon wedges, for serving
Tartar sauce, for serving
Instructions:
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Ensure there's enough oil to fully submerge the fish fillets.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the beer.
Gradually add the beer mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth and slightly thick.
Pat the walleye fillets dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture.
Dip each fillet into the batter, making sure it is fully coated. Let any excess batter drip off before frying.
Carefully place the battered fillets into the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 min. or until the fish is golden brown and crispy.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fillets from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Serve the beer-battered walleye fillets hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side. Enjoy them on their own or pair them with french fries!
