If you're following a specific recipe, and there are certain fruits or nuts you don't like, swap 'em out! The good thing about fruitcakes is that they're completely variable (but only where fruits and nuts are concerned). Some combinations might work better than others, but ultimately it's up to you what you put in it. Stick to the same amounts, however: a cup for a cup or go by weight if the shapes are different. Also, favor high-quality ingredients over the cheap stuff.
