French Dip - Downtown Deli (Iowa)

This locally owned hidden gem in Ames, Iowa has been around for more than 30 years and remains one of the best sandwich shops in town. It's got plenty of midwest charm, and the meats are sliced fresh in front of your eyes (a far cry from the usual processed meats everywhere else). The French dip gets particularly good reviews, served in either 7- or 14-inch sizes with a wonderfully flavorful au jus on the side.
