Modern Chopsticks

When resources were limited, chefs would cut their ingredients into smaller pieces—this shortened the cooking time which in turn used less fuel! With the food already in small bits, knives weren't helpful, but chopsticks were! On top of that, Confucian teachings advised against knives at the table due to their connection with violence. Chopsticks, on the other hand, were associated with gentleness.
