Grilled Not Fried

If there's a dish on the menu that is battered or breaded, ask your server if you can have it grilled instead. Many restaurants offer both fried and grilled versions of the same dish, so this shouldn't be an issue. It's a great way to freshen up a salad while still eating healthy fats. Of course, there are always exceptions, so if your dish can't be modified in this way, make sure you have a back-up choice.
