Portland, Oregon needs more restaurants like Tiffin Asha. Food can be an effective mind-opener or at least provide a footbridge to discovering new cultures, and that's exactly what this food-cart-turned-brick-and-mortar is all about—bringing South Indian cuisine with a modern flair to one of the least diverse major cities in America. Run by wife-and-wife team Sheila Bommakanti and Chef Elizabeth Golay, the restaurant veers from most traditional Indian eateries, eschewing cheese naans for thin, crepe-like dosas, delicately presented curries and idli. And don't worry, you can still get their famous stuffed "Hot Chick" dosa.
