Sub sandwiches are named for their long submarine-like shape and are stuffed to the brim with various meats, cheeses, vegetables and condiments. While there isn't really one specific recipe associated with its creation, the famous Italian sandwich helped popularized the concept, and then other regions around the US followed suit with their own versions and names (hoagie, grinder, hero).
