How America's Favorite Halloween Candies Came to Be

Candy Corn

Candy corn is the kind of sweet we more directly associate with Halloween, sold in the US and Canada. It's got white, orange and yellow coloring, and its shape is said to imitate that of corn kernels—which explains the name. It was first produced by the Wunderle Candy Company in the 1880's and referred to as "chicken feed." Rebecca Rupp of National Geographic wrote, "as chicken feed, candy corn was intended to appeal to Americans' largely agricultural roots." Later, it was manufactured by Goelitz Confectionary Company (today known as Jelly Belly), and today we simply call it "candy corn".

This French tarte tatin is golden, caramelized apple perfection!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 puff pastry
  • 6 apples, sliced
  • 3 oz.  chilled butter, chopped into chunks
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

 

METHOD

  1. Roll out a puff pastry.
  2. Lay out the apple slices in a pan.
  3. Add chunks of butter on top of the apples.
  4. Sprinkle the brown sugar on top.
  5. Cook for 20 minutes in oven at 350°F, to caramelize the apples.
  6. Place puff pastry on top of the caramelized apples.
  7. Cook for 15 minutes at 350°F.
  8. Enjoy!
