Eat slowly and chew more

Studies have shown that slower eating rates can lead to weight loss by reducing overall calorie intake in normal-weight subjects. This can be an effective way to maintain weight for those who aren't currently overweight or obese. And for those who are normal-weight, overweight or obese, chewing more frequently has been linked to reduced calorie intake at meals.

This makes sense for a few reasons. Your body needs time to register fullness, about 20 minutes, to be precise. If it takes you about that time to finish a reasonably portioned meal, then you're less likely to go back for seconds. Likewise, if your meal is unreasonable in terms of portion size, the slower you eat, the longer it'll take to finish. And that makes you less likely to clean your plate because you'll start to feel full before it's finished. Be mindful of your eating speed, and resist the urge to always clean your plate—you can always save the leftovers for later.
