Make your own salad dressings

Store-bought salad dressings like ranch, blue cheese, thousand island and French can quickly turn "healthy" salads into diet sabotage. On top of that, low-fat versions usually contain a laundry list of preservatives, additives and lots of salt, which ultimately outweigh the benefits of a lower calorie count.

Homemade dressings can be made in less than five minutes, and you get to control exactly what goes into them. Vinaigrette-based dressings are obviously going to be lighter than cream- or mayo-based ones, so avoid the latter if you're looking to cut calories. You should also replace refined sugar with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.
