Pavlova - Australia/New Zealand
Named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, this popular meringue-based dessert is just one source of disagreement between Australia and New Zealand, with both countries laying claim to its origins. Birthplace aside, it's generally agreed upon that pavlova was created to honor the famous dancer after one of her tours in the Oceania region in the 1920's. Its distinguishing trait is a crunchy exterior and soft, fluffy center. Commonly served with whipped cream and fresh fruit, it's especially popular as a summer dessert but can be found at any time of year in both island countries.
Where to eat: There are plenty of great places to try pavlova in Australia, but one of the local favorites can be found at Hopetoun Tea Rooms in Melbourne, where it's more classically prepared: baked meringue with double cream, fresh fruit and berries with passion-fruit pulp.
