Gibanica - Serbia

This traditional pastry from the Balkan region consists of a layered dish of cottage cheese and eggs. The pastry is usually cooked in a deep round pan and cut into wedges to serve. It can be enjoyed at mealtimes or as an appetizer or snack. It's also a popular dish for special occasions and holidays. Other fillings may include spinach, meat or potatoes, and there are a variety of sweet versions, too. Served hot or cold, it's delicious with its irresistibly flaky and crisp filo pastry and more-ish filling.

Where to eat: Dokolica Bistro in Belgrade's Vracar district is reputed for its cozy atmosphere, friendly service and delicious gibanica, which is served for breakfast.
