Pylsur - Iceland

If fermented shark isn't your thing, then probably the other most famous food to eat in Iceland are its hot dogs! But these are no ordinary frankfurters—here, they're made primarily from Icelandic lamb combined with a bit of pork and beef. The hot dogs come in a natural casing and are served in a steamed bun with a range of condiments including ketchup, sweet brown mustard, raw white and crispy fried onions and remoulade. If you want to eat one like a local, you must order it with everything. Bonus: they're one of the cheapest meals you can find in the super pricy Nordic country.

Where to eat: The original Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur stand in Reykjavik has been visited by many famous figures (the late Anthony Bourdain, former US President Bill Clinton, Metallica frontman James Hetfield, to name a few), with a name that literally translates to "the best hot dogs in town." There are now three more locations throughout the city.
