Lu Rou Fan - Taiwan

Lurou fan is hands-down one of the most popular Taiwanese dishes, with its melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly served on a bed of steamed white rice. The slightly sweet, slightly savory sauce has a lovely thick texture that coats the bits of fatty meat to perfection. You can find it served as street food or in restaurants, and it usually comes with pickled veggies, hard-boiled eggs and chopped green onions. In short, lurou fan is cheap Taiwanese comfort food at its finest.

Where to eat: Bring cash and be prepared to queue at Yi Jia Zi in Taipei, where the third-generation owners serve up some of the city's best lurou fan at a reasonable price.
