Kanelbulle - Sweden

In the US, these irresistible pastries are simply known as cinnamon buns, but in Sweden, where they originated, they're called kanelbulle. Made from yeast-leavened dough, the rolled buns are filled with a mixture of cinnamon, sugar and butter and baked until golden. Soft and fluffy, they're commonly enjoyed during fika, the daily Swedish ritual of taking a coffee break at 10 am and 3 pm. Unlike North American cinnamon rolls, which are topped with glaze or icing, kanelbulle usually only has a caramelized exterior that's topped with pearl sugar.

Where to eat: Café Husaren in Gothenburg is known for its cozy atmosphere, pleasant staff and delicious and giant cinnamon buns. Pro tip: If you plan on having a kanelbulle all to yourself, come here on an empty stomach (you'll thank us later).
