Durian - Southeast Asia

With its reputation for being one of the most foul-smelling foods in the world, you might not be so inclined to try this exotic fruit that's typical of Southeast Asia. In fact, it's odor is so pungent that its consumption is banned in some places, including public transportation and even in hotel rooms. Its flesh, on the other hand, tends to be sweet and creamy or savory and slightly bitter. Despite its distinctive taste and aroma, durian is a popular fruit in many Southeast Asian countries and is used in a variety of dishes, including desserts, ice creams, and smoothies.

Where to eat: Street vendors throughout Southeast Asia sell fresh durian, and it's probably best to consume the smelly fruit in the outdoors, to prevent any unpleasant lingering odors.
