Mooncake - China

The Chinese enjoy mooncakes all year round but especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival which celebrates the harvest and moon watching. Mooncakes are usually round and traditionally stuffed with sweet lotus seed paste and egg yolks from whole salted duck eggs that symbolize the full moon. The crust of the mooncake is often decorated with intricate designs, and some varieties even feature edible gold leaf. Mooncakes are not only a delicious treat, but they also bear great cultural significance and are often exchanged between friends and family during the Mid-Autumn Festival as a symbol of unity and harmony.

Where to eat: Enjoy a mooncake from any of the numerous Dao Xiang Cun bakeries in Beijing. The famous enterprise is one of the oldest Chinese bakeries still open today, with closely guarded recipes that date back hundreds of years.
