With just a few basic ingredients, you can create perfectly chewy bagels topped with a flavorful blend of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, and onion. This recipe guides you through activating the yeast, forming the dough, boiling, and baking, resulting in bakery-quality bagels right from your kitchen. Perfect for breakfast or as a snack, these homemade bagels are sure to impress!
Ingredients (for 6 bagels):
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 4 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg white (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
- 2-3 tbsp everything bagel seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, stirring until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 min. until it becomes frothy.
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole through the center with your finger, stretching the hole to about 2 inches in diameter. Place the bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a damp cloth, and let them rest for about 10 min.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). On the stovetop, bring a large pot of water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Carefully drop the bagels into the water, 2-3 at a time, and cook for 1-2 min on each side. Remove the bagels with a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and water to create an egg wash. Brush each bagel with the egg wash and sprinkle generously with everything bagel seasoning.
- Bake the bagels for 20-25 min. until they are golden brown. Allow them to cool on a wire rack before serving, and enjoy!
