Fact 2: How Chocolate Came to America

Chocolate made its way to America through European explorers. When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Americas in the 16th century, they encountered cacao and brought it back to Europe. Initially, chocolate was consumed as a bitter beverage and was often mixed with spices, wine, or corn puree.

In Europe, chocolate was first treated as a luxury item and even used as a remedy for various ailments. It was believed to have health benefits and was prescribed for conditions such as fever, stomach issues, and fatigue. Over time, the recipe for chocolate evolved, with the addition of sugar and milk, transforming it into the sweeter treat we recognize today.

Eventually, chocolate crossed the Atlantic to the American colonies, where it quickly gained popularity. By the 18th century, chocolate houses, similar to coffee shops, began to appear, and chocolate became more accessible to the general public. Today, chocolate is a staple in American culture, enjoyed in countless forms and flavors.
