Fact 5: How Healthy (or Unhealthy) Is Chocolate Really?

As with many things, moderation is key when it comes to chocolate. Experts recommend consuming about 1.5 ounces (45 grams) per week, which is roughly half a standard chocolate bar. Opinions on chocolate's health benefits vary, especially since it contains valuable antioxidants that support cell renewal, as well as flavonoids that can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

However, chocolate also has a significant amount of sugar and fat, which aren't as healthy. Among the types of chocolate, white chocolate is considered the least healthy because it contains the least amount of beneficial ingredients and the highest amount of calories and sugar. Milk chocolate is somewhat healthier, but dark chocolate is the favorite among nutritionists. Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and has lower sugar content.
