Upside-down apple tart

Upside-down apple tart is originally a French recipe called tarte tatin that came from the Tatin sisters in Sologne, France. The two women apparently created this dessert by mistake in their small hotel restaurant in the 1800s. Thanks to its caramel coating, it has a soft, molten texture that brings a certain sweetness and softness to the apples.

You can make the caramel beforehand to be sure not to burn it or prepare it directly in the tart pan. For the second option, place 3 1/2 tablespoons of butter into your tart pan, sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar, add 8 peeled and quartered apples, top with another 1/4 cup sugar, in addition to another 3 1/2 tablespoons of butter cut into cubes.

Top the apples with your crust, and bake for 35 minutes at 350° F. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream—pure yum!
