Milk

Milk has a relatively short shelf life, so a slight change to your consumption habits (a cereal-loving teenager going away on summer camp, for example) can lead to a lot of milk waste. Extend your milk's storage life by keeping it inside the fridge (not the door, where the temperature fluctuates wildly), and writing the use-by-date on the side or top of the carton with a marker. You can also freeze milk for up to 6 weeks, although it does sometimes separate during the thawing process, in which case it is better to use it in cooking.
