Arepa (Colombia, Venezuela)
Arepa technically refers to the cornmeal bread pockets or cakes, but it has also come to mean the sandwich itself - which can be filled or served with whatever you desire. Originating in pre-Columbian South America, it is a prized food in both Colombian and Venezuelan cuisines. This version is stuffed with carnitas, sliced sweet potatoes, black beans, cotija cheese and a creamy, tangy, herbaceous sauce.
