The crispy guide to homemade KFC chicken
Is there anything more sinful and delicious than biting into a juicy chicken drumstick? What if it were from KFC with that extra crunchy texture, giving you an irresistible urge to plunge into the bucket for more? Is your mouth watering yet? The good news is you probably already have (at home) all it takes to make authentic KFC-style chicken—but healthier.
Here are the crispy KFC recipes you need in your life:
Ingredients:
6 to 8 chicken drumsticks or wings
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon milk
Sunflower oil for frying
Preparation:
Put the flour in a bowl and add the salt and seasonings.
Mix with a spoon until everything is evenly distributed.
Heat the pan with enough oil to deep fry. If you have a fryer, use it instead.
Make egg wash in a bowl by beating the egg with a tablespoon of milk and a pinch of salt.
Dust the chicken in the seasoned flour, then soak in the egg wash.
Dip the chicken in the flour mixture again. This time make sure it’s nice and evenly coated throughout.
Fry the chicken over high heat until brown and then reduce the heat to medium. Cook until the chicken is done.
Remove from the frying pan and set on a paper towel-lined plate to soak up excess oil.
Serve hot.
What really drives us crazy at KFC is the Extra Crispy Chicken. Here’s a little cheat sheet to get your fix.
Follow the previous recipe and incorporate the following steps:
Before putting the chicken through the flour mixture and egg wash add a spice mixture to the chicken made of:
1 teaspoon basil powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Mix and coat the chicken until the spices are well distributed.
To get that extra crunchy texture, make a third coating with crushed sugar-free cornflakes.
Coat in the following order:
First dip the chicken in the egg wash, then dredge in the flour mixture and finish with the cornflakes.
Make sure you use enough deep frying oil, and try to maintain a stable temperature so you don't burn the chicken. Keep a close eye while cooking, and flip as needed.
Be it classic or extra crispy, once your chicken is ready, you're going to need a sauce to go with it. This will be the delicious finish to your homemade KFC meal.
Besides ketchup, mustard and BBQ sauce, here’s a sweet and tangy recipe that goes perfectly with every crunchy bite!
Ingredients:
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon ketchup
1/2 finely chopped onion
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili sauce
1 teaspoon mustard
2 teaspoons lemon juice
Throw all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
Enjoy!
