Jjapaguri

2019's South Korean black comedy thriller Parasite did more than win numerous awards and international accolades. It also inspired foodie spectators to recreate one of the film's Korean dishes at home. In the movie, the dish is referred to as ram-don, but its actual name is jjapaguri, which the subtitle translator deemed too difficult to translate. Ram-don came from the combination of instant noodles used in the dish: ramyeon and udon. What most spectators may not have grasped is that the Park family adds premium Korean beef (not simply sirloin, as it's translated) to the noodles, which was meant to highlight their wealth. The noodle dish on its own is considered to be cheap comfort food. Try the recipe now.

Ingredients for 1 serving:

  • 6 oz. sirloin beef
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 pack of chapagetti noodles, seasoning packet set aside
  • 1 pack of neoguri noodles, seasoning packet set aside

Instructions:

  1. Sear the beef in a smoking-hot pan until cooked to desired doneness. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Bring the water to a boil and cook the chapagetti and neoguri noodles together for 2 min.
  3. Drain just enough water to leave the noodles barely submerged, and return the pot to the stove over medium-low heat.
  4. Add the packet of chapagetti seasoning and half of the neoguri packet.
  5. Let simmer a few minutes more until the water is mostly evaporated.
  6. Cube or slice the steak, and add it back to the pot with the noodles. Stir and briefly heat through.
  7. Serve immediately.
  8. Enjoy!
